An elderly British woman, living in Italy, has been finally slapped with motoring fines totalling over $118,000 (6 lacs) after being tracked for many days by Italian police investigators.
The 62-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was traced after her Mercedes Benz car was photographed breaking city speed limits and entering traffic restricted areas 1,500 times in a matter of weeks, the Daily Mail reported.
Initially, Italian police in Florence were hampered in their attempts to trace her, as her car carried a British number plate and they were not allowed access to vehicle registration systems in other countries.
The woman, who lives in Florence, the capital city of Tuscan region, was eventually nabbed after police spotted the Mercedes parked in a street in the city and waited for her to return to it.
Just as she arrived, policemen handed over the details of the staggering amount of unpaid fines.

(Tamil Murasu)

Worlds Couple Engaged in Syria She's 3, He's 5
Hala and her fiance Khalid

Khalid's father Juma -- who lives in the city of Homs, some 100 miles north of Damascus -- told the paper that his son asked for his fellow kindergartner's hand in marriage "of his own free will," after a brief holiday romance. Both families are now reportedly preparing for the ceremony, which will take place in a decade, when Khalid is 15 and Hala 13. Such a ceremony would still be against Syrian law, which states the minimum age for marriage is 17 for women and 18 for men.

While child marriages aren't unknown in Syria's more remote rural regions -- ceremonies involving girls as young as 13 and boys age 15 have been known to take place in defiance of the law -- they're almost unheard of in its cities, where the average age of marriage for women is 25, according to rights organization Freedom House.

However, Juma has pledged that if the youngsters decide not to marry in a decade's time, he'll honor their request. "We know that Khalid or Hala might change their mind in the future," he said. "But what we do know at this stage is that they are very happy and talk to each other every day."

NASA confirms another Earth

NASA has found a planet outside our solar system that looks to be an awful lot like Earth or maybe even better, given that its climate is roughly like a balmy day in Key West.
The planet, Kepler-22b, is the first confirmed planet within the "habitable zone," meaning that liquid water could exist on the surface and support life. It is almost 2.5 times the size of Earth and 600 light years away, so you may want to start saving your frequent flier miles now if you want your great-to-the-29th-power grandchildren to have a shot at vacationing there.
Scientists estimate the temperature on the surface of the planet to be about 72 degrees, according to the Associated Press. Kepler-22b circles a star very similar to our own sun, although it does it in a slightly shorter period, with one Kepler 22-b year lasting about 290 days.
Scientists say it's likely the planet has water and land, but can't yet rule out the possibility that it is an entirely gaseous planet, which would severely limit its potential as an intergalactic vacation destination.
NASA's Kepler mission is all about finding potentially habitable planets by identifying possible candidates in other solar systems that are both roughly Earth-sized and in the "habitable zone" of their solar systems. The mission's most recent data identifies 48 candidate planets, but Kepler 22-b is the first to be confirmed.

Pakistani actress : photo-shoot Mess

A controversial Pakistani actress has been forced to deny posing naked for the India edition of FHM sporting a tattoo of the initials 'ISI' on her arm.
Veena Malik appears topless on the front of the December issue of FHM India, sparking outrage among conservatives in Pakistan - both for her nudity and the reference to Pakistan's intelligence agency.
But Miss Malik has strongly denied posing for the lads' mag, with the 33-year-old star insisting the picture had been 'morphed'.
'I have never posed nude. I have never done anything like that ever. My manager and legal team is looking into the matter. We will take legal action against them,' Miss Malik told PTI, the Indian press agency.
FHM India's editor, Kabeer Sharma, insisted however that nothing had been doctored, and claimed that the magazine could prove the photo's authenticity.
Mr Sharma told the BBC: 'We have video footage of the shoot as well as emails from Veena about how she's looking forward to the cover.'
The image was revealed on FHM India's website, Facebook page and Twitter account simultaneously today.
Dressed in shorts and seen hugging actor Ashmit Patel as well as swimming with Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, she was accused of behaving improperly by some Muslim clerics.
Miss Malik has also been accused of being a porn star. However, her refreshingly outspoken views have won her many fans from Pakistan's younger and more liberal circles.
Confronted about her 'immoral' behaviour by cleric Mufti Abdul Qawi on a TV talk show, she snapped back that the country had far more important things to consider - including the rape of children in mosques.
'I’m a Muslim woman, and I know my limits,' she shouted back. The mufti appeared to be too astounded to respond.

Earthquake in north Philippines; no damage reported yet.

An official says an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 shook the capital and parts of the northern Philippines. There are no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology chief Renato Solidum says movement in the Manila Trench off the country's western coast set off the earthquake Wednesday but it occurred deep under the ocean floor and did not cause any destruction.
Solidum says the quake was felt in metropolitan Manila and in the nearby provinces of Zambales, Bulacan, Pangasinan and in the mountain resort city of Baguio.
The Philippines is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. A 7.7-magnitude quake killed nearly 2,000 people in Luzon in 1990.

Strong earthquake hits Turkey, 217 confirmed Dead, 1,000 feared Dead

A powerful earthquake in eastern Turkey has killed at least 217 people with fears of a much higher eventual death toll, as emergency teams scrambled to reach the afflicted region.

(Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan (R) visits Ercis after the earthquake)

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the area near the city of Van, close to the Iranian border, although neighbouring towns and villages were among the worst hit. Idris Naim Sahin, Turkey’s interior minister, said on Monday that 100 people had been killed in Van and a further 117 in the badly hit town of Ercis, 100km further north.

“We don’t know where to put the dead bodies,” Eda Ekisoglu, a nurse at the state hospital in Ercis, told the CNN Turkin television channel on Sunday.

A survivor is carried to the ambulance

Nato said it stood ready to provide aid if necessary, as did Israel, Turkey’s former ally, from which Ankara has become increasingly estranged in recent years. Shimon Peres, Israel’s president, also called Abdullah Gul on Sunday to offer his condolences.

A Turkish foreign ministry official said Turkey had received offers of help from dozens of countries, but had so far declined assistance from all of them, according to Reuters.

Mustafa Erdik, the head of Istanbul’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, estimated that about 700 people had been killed, in contrast to the official count of 138. But, cautioning that the estimates were extremely provisional, he added that the death toll could be as high as 500-1,000.

The institute added that the earthquake, which hit at 10:41 GMT, was just 5km below the ground – relatively close to the surface, a factor likely to increase the damage it wreaked. There were numerous aftershocks.

“I am afraid it is going to be heavy,” Ahmet Lutfu Aker, the chairman of Turkey’s Red Crescent, said of the likely casualties. He added that his organisation had sent tents, blankets and food.

Initial reports indicated that the worst hit area was Van’s neighbouring town of Ercis. The earthquake was also felt in Armenia and Iran, but early reports did not indicate significant damage in either country.

Much of Turkey is earthquake-prone, including Istanbul, the capital and the country’s largest city, where thousands of people were killed in an earthquake in 1999. But the area around Van has long been considered particularly at risk.

Mr Erdik said Turkey’s humanitarian services had responded with unprecedented speed. But, since many of the villages in the mountainous region are isolated, it may take time for the scale of the damage to emerge.

The disaster struck Turkey at a time when the country is already in mourning for 24 soldiers killed by militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers party, or PKK, last week. In response, Ankara has sent troops over the border to Northern Iraq, where it said it had killed 49 members of the PKK, which Turkey, the US and the European Union all proscribe as a terrorist organisation.
